"Freedom has to be learnt through the ascesis, the ascetic discipline, of precise observation and imaginative thinking; and then it needs to be defended with courage and self sacrifice. As Nicolas Berdyaev observed, 'Freedom gives birth to suffering, while the refusal to be free diminishes suffering. Freedom is not easy, as its enemies and slanderers allege: freedom is hard; it is a heavy burden. Men, as Dostoevsky has shown with such amazing power, often renounce freedom to ease their lot.' Yet if we renounce freedom, we become less than truly human; and if we deny others their freedom, we dehumanize them."

Any Wannabe Angels Out There?

A lot of things can get in the way of the good we want to do. I have my own logistical nightmares to deal with, and I'm just starting to figure out how to manage them. But it's not always our strategies that cut through the excuses; it's the need.

Blackfive just broadcasted the words of the founder of Soldiers' Angels:

WE HAVE MANY MORE HEROES BEING SUBMITTED THAN ANGELS JOINING, and that is with 50 to 100 angels joining a DAY. We really did good at Christmas..Heroes Love to be adopted. We have whole units joining...
I'm sitting here at a desk that's piled high with work, looking at postal receipts from the many packages I've sent already...and I can't stand the thought of someone falling through the cracks. Imagine being a soldier far away from family...imagine putting pride in your pocket and asking for help...and imagine that request for help being ignored.

So here's what we need to do:
If you want to adopt a soldier, you commit to send:
1 card or letter a week
1-2 care packages a month. (They don't need to be expensive)

You can also join various teams or donate directly.

I've lurked in the background for a while, donating to various projects and being an unofficial Angel to someone in Afghanistan. I think I'm going to take the plunge and adopt a soldier. Yes, I'm terrified that someday I'll fail him/her. But not doing anything is the worst failure of all.

Hi WatchCat, I'e been an Angel for 2 yars now. It's the best thing I've ever done. All it took was one FreeMail from my soldier to seal my fate!! It definitely was a life style change to think of someone else's needs instead of only my own.
