"Freedom has to be learnt through the ascesis, the ascetic discipline, of precise observation and imaginative thinking; and then it needs to be defended with courage and self sacrifice. As Nicolas Berdyaev observed, 'Freedom gives birth to suffering, while the refusal to be free diminishes suffering. Freedom is not easy, as its enemies and slanderers allege: freedom is hard; it is a heavy burden. Men, as Dostoevsky has shown with such amazing power, often renounce freedom to ease their lot.' Yet if we renounce freedom, we become less than truly human; and if we deny others their freedom, we dehumanize them."

Wanted: One Word

I know I quote Blackfive a lot, but they're very good at what they do. They just put up another excellent post on the dangers of the latest funding bill. It also cites MoveOn.org as a major player in the anti-war campaign. The post exposes the shallow nature of the Democrats claims of "supporting the troops." I don't know whether to call them malicious or blind. Even my limited experience told me that incremental funding would create dangerous supply issues, long before the bill was passed. So why don't they see it?

But a visit to the nefarious MoveOn.org site showed me something very interesting, particularly in light of my recent post on the need to know what the American people are actually looking for. The site has one buzzword for Iraq: Escalation. That very powerful word is likely a major influence on the American people. They see the negative reports in the MSM, hear the word escalation, and think that if we don't bring the troops home, they'll see even more of those news stories, multiplied by several factors. The insurgents use the word "occupation" and the anti-war lobbyists use "escalation."

So what's our word?

You are absolutely correct about the Democrats.

But how about the Republicans?

The Bush Administration has failed to provide the individual soldiers in the field with the tools they need especially the body armor that can safe their lives, how the Bush Administration has failed to adequately provide the soldiers with needed quality health care when returning injured from the war, the extended tours of duty, and let us the Petraeus (Betrayus) letter, and the Bush Administration's predilection for locking our soldiers up for doing their jobs.

It is getting pretty hard being a Republican and a supporter of the troops as well. You certainly can't be a Bush-bot, a supporter of Bush and a supporter of the troops, for what Bush has done has done great harm to our fighting men and women in the field.

Check this website out.

It was on the AP wire, printed in newspapers all over the world.

Including that one above.

It grieves me, but if their isn't a significant attitude adjustment by the Bush Administration real soon, this war is lost.

Just like in Vietnam.

Alex, is there a specific article on the site you're referring to? I just get the main page with your link.

Fred,
I'm not saying that many Republicans are getting it right either. The current administration has had many failings, but I also keep in mind that the beginning of a new administration isn't a clean slate in government. Bush was also dealing with Clinton-era problems, particularly in military funding issues. The structure of our government makes it very difficult to revolutionize anything, whether for good or ill.

I point out problems where I see them, but I'm not as interested in criticizing various politicians as I am in putting our heads together to improve the situation.
